AL Fears Prison Takeover by Feds
State officials are concerned about a possible takeover of the Alabama prison system by the feds. The “Montgomery Advertiser” reports that state penitentiaries are the country’s most underfunded, understaffed and overcrowded. There have been four reports of inmate abuse in recent weeks. Part of the problem is that lawmakers want tougher sentences, but they don’t come up with the money for prison upkeep.
