Holiday BudgetDecember 05, 2013
The holidays can be tough. And with the economy not showing much improvement there are a lot of families that will be struggling to make Christmas happen for their families this year. Fortunately, Jan Brakefield, an assistant professor of Consumer Sciences at The University of Alabama has provided 10 different tips for saving money this holiday season.
- Make a spending plan and stick to it.
- Shop early. This eliminates last minute panic buying.
- Be prepared each time you leave home to shop. Carry a list of who you are buying for and how much you can spend. Be specific. Get agreements from family members.
- Pay cash. Credit card users typically spend twice as much money as others.
- Use the “envelope method.” Prepare one envelope per person, placing money in each envelope. When the envelope is empty, you are finished buying for that person.
- Shop when you have lots of energy.
- Shop with a buddy, or not. A buddy may encourage you to splurge, so choose your buddy carefully.
- Ask sales staff about upcoming discounts. They will usually tell you, but won’t offer the information unless you ask.
- Don’t buy anything for yourself.
- Write the size of your total consumer debt at the top of your shopping list. Reality check!
Black Friday RunNovember 29, 2013
So, Black Friday is upon us, but it feels like things are a little less chaotic this time around. A lot of stores had opened on Thanksgiving and then staying open through Black Friday. In a lot of locations people didn’t seem as rushed.
WQSB’s very own, Mary Kate, had a chance to go out this morning to see the supposed madness “first hand,” and as she came back it didn’t seem things were as frantic as they had been in previous years.
Granted, there are other ways to score sweet deals without having to deal with the pushing and shoving of crowds. In a recent poll conducted by IPSOS it seems that %75 of shoppers plan to do either “some” or “all” of their shopping online.
SO, will you brave the crowds this weekend or will you reside in the comforts of your home and internet connection?
Word Of The YearNovember 26, 2013
Is it “hash tag?” No. Well, what about “fail?” You would think so, but according to Oxford Dictionary “selfie” has won the famous title of “Word of the Year.”
We have celebrities such as Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and many others to thank for this. Because of tinseltown the word has trickled into our everyday vocabulary. Here it is as defined in the Oxford Dictionary.
“A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
The Not So Much Self Healing WolverineNovember 22, 2013
Yes, we’re talking about none other than Hugh Jackman. And unlike his counterpart, Wolverine, he is just like everyone else and is not immune to everyday mortal harm. And fortunately for him and the world his wife, Deb, had noticed a weird little spot on his nose. This weird little spot turned out to be skin cancer.
He had posted a photo of himself to Instagram shortly after having it removed. “Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a [basal] cell carcinoma. Please don’t be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!” the Wolverine star wrote.
Even though it’s not Summer still make sure to apply sunscreen when outdoors. The suns rays pay no mind to the seasons!

Mariah Carey's Idol Trip To HellNovember 14, 2013
With one season of judging the famous American Idol TV show under her belt and not another to come, Mariah Carey has recently spoke out about how working the competition was “hell”. On Tuesday she told Hot 97 that her experience was like ”going to work every day in hell with Satan.”
Everyone knows about Carey’s famous feud with Nikki Minaj that was carried on throughout season 12, but before continuing the interview, Carey laughed about the situation saying, ”Nah, I’m just playing. It didn’t affect me that much — I was just disappointed,”
According to Carey, she was the first to sign on as a judge for the season. Only expecting a three person panel, Carey said the show wasn’t what she thought it would be. However, she did enjoy working with the contestants saying,
“I loved the contestants. And some of them that were so good — and really good people, you could tell — it was disappointing when they would, for political reason, not put people through. I’m like, ‘I don’t need to sit here and do this.’ I would prefer to just put this person in the studio, record a record with them. Or tell another producer, ‘Yo, you should produce this artist because they’re beautiful, they can sing, they’re talented.’ ”
Carey states that she is looking forward to doing her own thing on the road and studio.

Reality Fame Results In HardshipsNovember 05, 2013
Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, but at what costs? Recently, Jon and Kate from TLC’s reality show “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ interviewed on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN show “Where Are They Now?”
Jon opened up about how filming impacted his marriage, reputation, and his children. Jon currently making it by as a waiter for a Philadelphia restaurant–he says his children have probably suffered the most from the reality program.
Jon was quoted saying, “I saw my kids not growing up normally, like I grew up, and having community. Yes, they got to travel the world, and yes, they got these fabulous things, and yes, they have trust funds, and they’re taken care of educationally. Great, but developmentally, they have problems with their peers, and they have problems with talking to other people, and they have problems with wants and needs and manners and morals and what’s right and what’s wrong. I think more so than someone who grows up off TV.”

Gaye Family Sues Over Blurred LinesOctober 31, 2013
The family of Marvin Gaye has recently announced that they’ll be suing Robin Thicke over the song “Blurred lines.” It has been reported that the family believes Robin Thicke had stolen certain elements of the song.
The Gaye family are seeking damages and a portion of “Blurred Lines” profits. What will more than likely happen is that this will be carried into court, but the Gaye family will most likely receive absolutely nothing out of the law suit.
The question that will be asked is if the average listener would mistake one song for the other. Since lyrically there are no similarities and even though the sound might be vaguely similar it would be near impossible for the average Joe Schmoe to inadvertently confuse one song for another.
Therefore, there is nothing to suggest that any kind of economical impact would be bestowed upon Marvin Gaye’s original work, “Give it up.” I am sure nothing will come from the lawsuit, but we’ll continue to provide updates as the case moves forward. What are your thoughts? Do you think there is a case to be made? Email me your thoughts at the link below.
From Bane To Pop SingerOctober 28, 2013
Tom Hardy has recently been selected to play Elton John in a new biopic that should be coming out later next year. Elton John is reportedly re-recording some songs for the film and is quite excited to work with the actor, Tom Hardy.
I don’t know about you, but this definitely comes as a little bit of a surprise. However, Tom Hardy has proven himself as a versatile actor with such films as “Warrior,” “Bronson,” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”
How do you think the film will turn out? Do you believe Tom Hardy can handle the role of “pop star?”
